Mental Capacity Act and DoLS Course

Mental Capacity Act (MCA) and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) training introduces the legal principles used when supporting people who may be unable to make certain decisions for themselves. The Mental Capacity Act 2005 applies to people aged 16 and over in England and Wales and provides a framework for supporting decision-making while protecting their rights. DoLS provide safeguards for people who lack capacity and may be deprived of their liberty. Together, they help health and social care professionals make informed decisions while respecting each person’s dignity and freedom.

Understanding the MCA is important for health and social care professionals because a person should not be assumed to lack capacity because of an illness, disability or mental health condition. The Act focuses on giving people the right support to make their own decisions wherever possible and considering their wishes and feelings when they cannot. Understanding DoLS also helps staff recognise when restrictions on a person’s freedom may require safeguards and proper authorisation.

This online CPD course explores the core principles and practical concepts of the MCA and DoLS. Learners will develop an understanding of capacity assessment, the two-stage test, best-interests decision-making, valid consent, autonomy and least restrictive options, along with key roles such as an IMCA and Lasting Power of Attorney. The course also explains when restrictions may amount to a deprivation of liberty and how DoLS safeguards help protect individual rights and freedom. Aligned with CQC standards and Skills for Care training frameworks, the Mental Capacity Act and DoLS course is designed to support good practice in health and social care settings.
